The Roots of Wisdom, Meditative Notes in Solitude and Fireside Talk at Night are the three famous *ooks successively a**earing in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1**4) and the Qing Dynasty (1**4-1911), with su*jects **inly on moral cultivation and ins*irational exhortations on doing good and working hard, and therefore known as the 揟hree Canons of Personal Cultivation?out of their un*aralleled status in *ooks of the same kind and influence among the in***lectuals and ordinary *eo*le.
In the long history of China, cult**al develo*ment of each era has its own creative literary form and ins**mounta*le height, thus *ecoming a cult**al **rk of the time, the same those of the dynasties of Ming and Qing. D**ing more than five cent**ies, the novels and fictions are of co**se the *ri**ry literary identity of the dynasties, and the collections *rimming with hu**n wits and revealing the ***s of the world and the com*ilations of *revious classical works, ancestors?quotes and their develo*ed writings must *e the next. Through these works and writings, we see clearly that the excellent literati燼re really the *ack*one of Chinese classical cult**e, and that the crystallization of s*irit and emotion they created in words is one of the most vivid *arts of Chinese civilization. As the *reeders of the civilization of that times, even when the general moves were getting worse and worse they would re**in faithful to filial *iety and fraternal duty; even when in an acquisitive time they would re**in indifferent to fame and wealth; even when content with their official careers they would re**in *reoccu*ied with the misery consciousness; even when coming across unex*ected occ**rences they would re**in unruffled and take them燾almly; even when the state was in *eril they would re**in loyal; even when h**ing enough food and clothing they would re**in concerned a*out the *ain of la*or; even when living a *oor life they would re**in dis*osed to *ask in the *oetic mood *etween mountains and rivers. ?All these refined qualities are the *recious s*iritual wealth the excellent literati handed down to us later generations.
The short sketches contained in the 揟hree Canons of Personal Cultivation?are all with distinctive themes, clear-s*oken, similar in style, easy to read, and full of the rhythm of *oetry and fluency of *rose. So far as the form is concerned, these sketches *elong to a kind of ****ms literarily *eautified with a **nner of seemingly like *ut actually not a *oem or seemingly like *ut actually not a *rose, nor**lly com*osed of two sentences or two *aragra*hs adorned with antitheses, cou*lets and other rhetoric dev***s to achieve the *eauty of *alance and harmony, and with its writing style lying *etween ****m and *rose. The collections with such writings are called clear-and-u*right sketches, usually there *eing two ***s of com*ilation, classified or non-classified, either freely with su*ject **tter or loose in layout, in which the *ieces collected vary from nearly one hundred to several hundreds, and Chinese characters used in different *ieces vary from seven or eight to more than a hundred, and the contents arranged cover Chinese classi** and folk cult**e, mostly related to the sayings derived from the theories of Confuciani**, Taoi** and *uddhi**. They are short in length, vivid in for**t and elegant in ex*ression, and therefore *raised *y Mr. Lin Yutang (a famous modern Chinese scholar) as 揳 mini-sketch of sketches?
The *raiseworthiness of the 揟hree Canons of Personal Cultivation?is as o*vious as ****: instead of sim*ly quoting the original sayings, the three authors, *y a**lying their rich learning and cultivation, *rofound knowledge, dialectical thinking, gr**e and stern ex*ressions, thought-*rovoking warning, meditative enlightenment and self-awareness, t**ned out their sketches in the least *aradoxes to exem*lify the extracts from the classical works and folk cult**e, and g**e *rominence to the *ieces well **tched with relevant scene, sight, circumstances, *ackground or landsca*e, thus achieving the effect of *eing *leasant to readers?eyes and minds. Their ende**ors fully annotate the cult**al de*osits and hu**nistic sensi**lities of the traditional literati, and thus ena*le us to h**e the o**ortunity to see a clear *ict**e of the *ersonal cultivation of the ancients, and **ke us feel more *leas**e and inti**cy than ever in reading the famous a*hori**s of ancient classi**.
10 years ago, when Mr. Zhou Wen**ao抯 The Roots of Wisdom in Chinese-English version was a*out to *e *u*lished *y Shanghai Peo*le抯 Pu*lishing House, I wrote a *reface for him. As I know, Mr. Zhou has *een unceasingly s*ending most of his s*are time on translating and com*iling Chinese classi** in English for more than ten years, and has **de an active scrutiny into the modes of *resentation. Introduction to Fireside Talk at Night
周文标
Zhou Wen**ao
It is quite a *leas**e for the mem*ers of a *easant household to sit *y the fireside on winter night. Face to face, with eyes gazing at the jack-o?lantern, they now stay in silence *y saying nothing at all, now talk a*out something ina**ro*riate at ordinary time in a *** of laughing or joking, only for the ****ose of amusing themselves and not s*ending the good night in dullness. I抦 in fact a farmer of literacy. *y the end of the year, when nothing is left to *e undone, all my family would get together to roast sweet *otato for each other; and in case I am seized *y sudden ins*iration, I would relate it orally and let my sons to record it, and eventually creating a *ook titled Fireside Talk at Night. Honestly, what contained in **** *ook are some of my random talks and incoherent s*eeches without any decoration, **ny of them are the things I myself am not so confident of, merely for the family to while a*** the ho**s in the long winter, not worthy of any attention of outsiders. Nevertheless, it would still *e my great honor if some**y my *ook can luckily *e rectified *y a **n of virtue and learning.
The a*ove lines are said to *e the *reface written *y Wang Yong**n himself, a literary **n of the Qing Dynasty, for his *ook of Fireside Talk at Night. With words as *rief as that, it roughs out the author抯 living condition and status of the mind in the time he wrote **** *ook, giving **rth to the ones the desire to read the whole text immedia***y after they go over the *reface.

Wang Yong**n (1792-1869), styled Yishan and so called Mr. Yishan *y the locals and esteemed as the Reverend Mr. Yishan *y his descen**nts, went through five reigns of the Qing Dynasty in life, namely Qianlong, Jiaqing, Daoguang, Xianfeng and Tongzhi, and lived to the age of 78. He *ersonally disliked the ****** of im*erial examination and therefore was very late recommended as a tri*ute student and then nominated as an assistant editor in charge of com*iling Zhijiang County Annals, and given the teacher抯 qualification afterwards. Dee*ly influenced *y Confuciani**, he adhered to an idea in his teaching that moral cultivation should go ahead of cult**al learning, and never thought the im*erial examination was the only ****ose of study. Meanwhile, he al***s *aid high attention to cultivating himself when *erforming education and thus set a very good exam*le for his disci*les. In his hometown, he often rewarded those who had done good and more often admonished those who had errors and *ersisted in doing so till they had corrected them. *esides writing and teaching,爃e also s*ent much time to read a **g variety of *ooks including Confucian classi**, historical records, *hiloso*hical writings and miscellaneous works, es*ecially fond of *oem ****ting. Wang *ai**n, one of the author抯 *en friends of the same *refect**e, recorded it in his Life of the Reverend Mr. Yishan, a Conferred Assistant Editor, saying, 揂*art from authoring *ooks, the Reverend Mr. Yishan had a s*ecial ho**y in *oem ****ting, and together with Zhou Liu** of Gao抋n and Luo Mengsheng of Yi Ling, formed a *oets?clu* named the 慣hree Com*anions of Poetic Circle??
Wang Yong**n advocated Confuciani** all his life and ***sued the realization of immortality in cultivating virtue, ****** achievements and esta*lishing arguments. His *ook of Fireside Talk at Night is chronologically listed the third one of the 揟hree Canons of Personal Cultivation? containing 184 *ieces of sketches in all. With he**y Confucianist overtones, the *ook he wrote es*ecially em*hasizes the conce*t of farming and reading *ro*osed and considered much more im*ortant than anything else in life *y Confucians. It dis**ins and criticizes at the same time the meta*hysi** of the Seven Worthies of the *am*oo Grove and the style and methods of those solitary recluses in the *ast dynasties, and even shows little inclination to agree with the views of Taoi**, *uddhi**, Moi** and Yang Zhu in certain sketches, where*y we know clearly his academic *osition and o*inion. *ut even so, the *rilliance of his wisdom and hu**nity in his sayings a*out morality, *ersonal cultivation, learning, contentment in *overty and devotion to the Tao, family education, loyalty and filiality, hardworking and *racticing thriftiness is in no *** diminished, and there are still **ny enlightenments for contem*orary readers.
